Get to Know Me
Hi!!!! My name is Lisa Andrews, and I am so proud to say that I am a professional school counselor within Pomona Unified School District as well as an Adjunct Faculty at University of La Verne's Educational Counseling Department and Consultant.
I love being a school counselor, and If I were to find 3 words to describe my counseling philosophy it would be:
“Equity, Access and Opportunity
Since March of 2000, I have been personally invested in the creation of student focused programs that promote college to career readiness, but also prepares students to meet the challenges of life beyond high school. I am an advocate for all students, but truly enjoy pulling students up who have fallen by the wayside academically.
There is no greater joy than to see a student rise and become the student they never thought they could be! It is those moments that make me so proud of the work we do as school counselors!
One of the joys of this profession, are not simply working with the students who obtain straight A’s, but mentoring students who have struggled with finding their way academically, then watching them transform into a student that has taken ownership of their learning, and realizes that they have college potential. These are the students that are unsung heroes to me and my motivation.
“I firmly believe that education is the key to equalizing opportunity and leveling the playing field for all, and students benefit greatly from educational plans that is strength focused and removes barriers to rigorous educational content.”
Education
I love learning and it shows! In fact if I could be a career college student I would in a heartbeat! I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Disorders from University of Redlands, a Masters of Social Work from University of Southern California, Masters in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, and Master of Arts from University of La Verne in School Counseling. My educational journey has led me to adopt a counseling philosophy that is predicated on student wellness, social justice and advocacy.
I firmly believe that education is the key to equalizing opportunity and leveling the playing field for all. I want all of my students to benefit from educational plans that are based on their personal strengths, experiences and creates access to rigorous educational programs that prepare them to succeed in life and realize economic self-sufficiency. I make great efforts to educate students about the world around them and the implication societal trends sustain on their current quality of life and the life they aspire to live.
“I love Being a School Counselor and I consider it my life’s work. Watching students take charge of their learning and achieve to their highest level makes my life so much better and purposeful. Watching them take the stage at graduation and bringing a smile to their parents’ faces brings my heart joy.”
Family
I have a true love for life family and my friends. When not working, I can be found in my home in Studio City, Ca with my other half, playing tennis daily, hanging out with my two Shihtzu’s and finding any excuse to listen to my pretty enormous music collection.
